   Obesity (not alcohol) is the #1 cause of liver disease in the U.S.

   Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)

   NAFLD causes excess fat to build up in the liver. Diet and digestive disorders are the main causes.

   • NAFLD is the most common cause of liver disease worldwide.
   • It is not caused by heavy alcohol use.
   • 24% of U.S. adults are estimated to have NAFLD.
   • NAFLD is present in up to 75% of overweight people.

   Risk factors include:

   1. being overweight/obesity
   2. type 2 diabetes/insulin resistance
   3. high cholesterol/triglyceride levels
   4. one or more traits of metabolic syndrome (traits and medical conditions linked to overweight/obesity)
   5. old age
