   the mig-25 was never intended to be an air superiority fighter but a dirt cheap to mass produce INTERCEPTOR to catch the proposed inter continental supersonic tactical bomber XB-70 valkyrie that never got into production but the whiff of the prototype the soviets caught scared them into developing a response to the valkyrie BEFORE it was put into production so some ivans and igors at mikoyan gurevich were put on the forced plane design labour office to disregard every concern that wasn't speed, missiles and a radar capable of catching the bombers, even if it meant the planes were semi disposable so long as they could have a chance of stopping the XB-70...

   then the DoD saw the plane an assumed it was a fighter jet...
