Was originally going to put this in the grimdark thread, but I feel it deserves it's own little post rather than being a reply for how much of an unrelated text wall it is (spurred on by thinking about KKHTA).
If it's not at all obvious, I like the Moriya shrine group quite a bit. Suwako is the clear favorite sure, but Sanae and Kanako are very important to the small group they have and their interactions. They're a really interesting bunch with very peculiar personalities, an older god who mostly acts relaxed and playful, but helps in the background when need be. The new god who plays the role of the people person, appearing to others and showcasing her power frequently. Then there's the human god shrine maiden, a girl doing her best in the familiar, yet unfamiliar world she's been adapting to and becoming a massive extrovert. They all have a unique dynamic from the rest of the cast too, Suwako and Kanako seemingly acting as parental figures for Sanae, while they've got a mini-rivalry between each other.
Point is, I dislike seeing their images twisted too much because they've already got immense amounts of life to work with. There's no need to make them violent, have any of them suffer, force new personalities on them, etc, in order to give them interesting stories. For example, Sanae clearly still has some yearning for modern day Japan, some love of what she had before Gensokyo. She'll make constant references to her favorite media and come up with ideas for outside world stuff she wants. ZUN never dwells on this, it's an open point for others to work from that can tell any number of frankly wonderful stories. There's also the dynamics between the girls, Suwako and Kanako clearly deeply care for Sanae, and there's quite a bit to play off there. You can even ditch the world of Gensoyko, tell stories in alternate settings to explore how that shakes up their daily lives. It's also somewhat wrapping back around to my statement about my love of Touhou as a whole from quite a while back, as twisted as it may be, Touhou is one of the few series I feel genuine full emotional connection to. I don't want to see these characters suffer without reason because I, to some degree, care about them. Even the ones I jokingly insult I can truly appreciate; Sure Yukari's a bitch, but she's an important bitch who is trying her best to make friends and protect her little world.
And as a bonus, some suggested reading of good doujins starring the Moriya Shrine cast.

https://dynasty-scans.com/chapters/days_woven_from_illusions_the_wind_charmer_shrine_maiden The Days Woven From Illusion series are some of the few doujins that can seriously break me, the emotions they hit with can be very powerful and bring out a tear.
I was going to post one about the move to Gensokyo and Sanae, but I can't find one I truly adore. Watch Hifuu Club Activity Record -Prayer- for that I guess, it's not the absolute best but I do remember enjoying the unique angle of someone who the world left behind, someone who wasn't destined for or bound to fantasy.
