I absolutely reject the "tortured artist" trope, suffering does not make one a better creator.
Besides this meme page I also write texts and poetry to (mostly) myself, and being depressed or angry absolutely does not make any of that better. In fact, the most dry times for my creative outlets are when I am feeling the worst, and I tend to put out more things of lower quality because I simply enjoy doing it and it's a way to cope.
People like Van Gogh were not better creators due to their struggles, they were great creators despite their sufferings. In fact, I would bet that one of the only things Van Gogh enjoyed doing was painting.
As David Lynch said, you do not have to be filled with tragedy to portray tragedy, and negativity is the enemy of creativity.
This is part of the reason I really doubt that the great majority of people has experienced firsthand what depression truly is like, they romanticize it to the degree of thinking beautiful things can come out of it. I touched on the point of romanticizing depression before, but just to reiterate: truly reaching rock bottom is not only having difficult getting out of bed, but witnessing the very essence of your being diminished due to the load that you a carrying. How can you reasonably expect anything inspired to come out of that?
Creating to adorn the beauty in your life will always be better than creating because otherwise you might turn that creative energy on you and destroy yourself.
