ive been thinking a lot about the current thing where shitlibs on Twitter are crying about how many mangaka and other jap creators turn out to be “fascists”. theres a lot to say, but I think more than anything else it’s a reflection of the totalitarian nature of liberalism: no wrong thinking creator can be suffered to have his works published because no wrong thought can ever be suffered to proliferate. It’s essentially the other side of the “media literacy“ meme, they think right wingers are stupid for liking things created by leftists because they think it’s intolerable for them to enjoy anything created by right wingers and they project that framework onto right wingers. “You chuds are so stupid for liking American Psycho, the author of the original novel is LGBT and the director of the film is a woman and they hate gays and women” translates to “I could never enjoy something made by the wrong kind of person.”
I don’t know if it’s something to the general character of right wingers vs left wingers that produces this difference or if it’s simply because liberals and other leftists have such an iron grip on the creative arts industries in the west that right wingers have adapted out of necessity, but we’re much more willing to accept a work as it is and take the good with the bad or reinterpret things to our own satisfaction. but for liberals anything short of the full suite of up to date current year values is unacceptable, and I’m sure trying to enjoy Japanese media is pretty terrifying to them, here’s this whole country that SEEMS liberal but they’re suspiciously homogenous and dangerously similar to whites in some of their habits, their politics don’t translate 1:1 to American politics in an easy to understand way to identify “fascists” and they have a culture of politeness and professionalism so a creator may be secretly a “fascist” and never once reveal it.
