@PunishedD Knives are a bit like analog mechanical watches. A callback to a more civilized time, a token of position, honor, that sort of thing. Soldiers buy them so they can say they carried it in battle when they hand it down to their grandsons. That's why a lot of my coworkers in the plane-flyin' industry love watches. We know we don't really need them, when everything has a synced clock ticking in the corner of our avionics, EFB, but it's fun to have and it taps into tradition. It's fun to play with and enjoy on the clock. It's fun to make something your kids want to inherit.
Sure, these combat blades are killing implements, and they all vary in effectiveness, but in the end, I doubt anyone in our current generation of owners will even use theirs to kill an animal, or else there would be a much more realistic, seasoned, and sober approach to the idea of knifefighting.
We did away with the romance of a gunslinger, people get the role of luck, fortune, preparation, and grit in a shooting fight, but we still tend to draw on myth and fantasy when we add that fancy dagger to the cart and choose 2-day shipping.
