   I dislike this “kids these days are retarded lol” attitude, because the kids are what YOU make of them. Children are not given opportunities like this anymore, these guys are extreme, nonexistent edge cases. Yeah, men were always more mature than today because they simply had to be in order to survive, they started working much earlier, got more varied life experience long before us - hell, the average 26 yo man today from an UMC background is essentially no different than he was at 16. He’s spent years in college, years out of the workforce, and he has little true pain, suffering, or strife under his belt.

   But where the hell is he to obtain it? Protective parents balk at the kinds of things boys need to become men, and there aren’t many slots in that work anyways. You can’t just go out and serve in dangerous jobs with no experience and an empty resume at 18 like you used to. Good luck getting them to sign off on letting their darling baby go up north to work on a crab boat or oil rig.

   Like so many career paths, we’ve never paid attention to creating and growing the next generation, then we’re surprised when they don’t take up those non-existent appretniceships.
