I've talked about it before but it's worth evaluating your feelings about the apocalypse.
There's a romance to the end of the world. A longing to see all society and civility stripped away and replaced by naked, unhidden, unrepentant violence. It's less terrifying than seeing it all slowly decline into a coast-to-coast favela, because all the problems that face you are things you can simply solve with violence.
The scarier end is that the power structure manages to keep the lights on some of the time. That the courts still show up and dispense justice some of the time, that enough of the population is comfortable enough to pretend the world is doing just fine, and you're the crazy one for saying they're not.
In that world, you can't just rest easy knowing that you'll make it through the night as long as 3 of your guys are on watch with a gun in their laps. You can't be happy knowing you can dispense your own justice and make your own fate. Instead, you're powerless against everything the regime can do, and enough of your allies are fat & happy that no one lifts a finger to come to your aid.
So it makes sense why the pseudo-dissidents see the end of the world around every calendar's end. It's a relief, a great balancing of the scales, an evening of the odds, a final, blessed imposition of nature upon an unnatural world.
Maybe it gets here someday, but I think we got a lot longer to trudge through our nigger-ridden favela epoch first.
