@HWABAG IDK, probably goes down to whatever variant of the mustang was cheapest or something. They all have tradeoffs, what you see as a weakness in a model is generally made up for in its strengths.
The P-47 is an undersung hero of the allied war effort, but it was ludicrously expensive for the time. Could take intense levels of damage, huge payload, etc. But it was large and costly so people don't think about it as much. Not as sexy.
The BF109 is decried for its narrow landing gear track, but that same thing allowed them to manufacture it way easier and make it one of the most-produced fighters of the war (maybe history? IDK like 35,000 of them)
That's leaving out the superprops, which are all cool. Something very charming about the very best of a breed on the precipice of extinction
