Since Trump the regime has grown ever more hysterical over 'misinformation' and 'conspiracy theories' in what it calls the "post-truth" era. This is not simply a difference of opinion, but the beginning of balkanization along epistemic lines. We don't trust their fact-checkers and they don't trust ours. In a world where the only communities are communities of belief (civic nationalism), a difference of opinion is an ethnogenesis—and so, intolerable.
When you talk about your “frens”, the Cathedral, the Kosher Sandwich, or the Longhouse, you’re signalling much more than something ‘in the world’—you’re signalling something about yourself and where you fit into it. We’re splintering into discrete spaces not just of shared values, but of shared concepts—this is the epistemic divorce.
