   Not productive for money's sake, for your family's.

   Spending time with your family, enriching their lives with your attention and presence is an investment and almost always more important than picking up extra shifts. Once you have the minimum income to support them and safeguard their future, your wife and children have greatest claim to your time, and spending it on them is the best investment you can make. The kids need their father's attention more than ever before, there are way too many landmines in society to let them just meander their way through being their own parent.

   I have this argument with guys that pick up too much work too. They're better off spending a week off puttering around the house and parenting their kids than they are racking up $10,000 to spend on a fancy couch or a beat rolex.
