An old etching/illustration of two cases containing letter "stamps" that were used in printing. The case on the top is called 'Upper case' and the other 'Lower case'. This is the origin of the terms 'lowercase' and 'uppercase'.

'uppercase' and 'lowercase' are remnants of the moveable type practice of keeping capital letters on a separate case, above the miniscule letters.
