As a long-time FreeBSD user, I find it bizarre that Ubuntu keeps older kernels and takes up disk space. I have just freed up some disk space. So, I suppose I should thank you?!

Is it? The reason mainstream distros like Ubuntu/Debian or RHEL and other #Linux distros keep the last 3 or 4 kernels is so that you can go back in case there is incompatibility.# FreeBSD also keep at least one old kernel on disk https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/ubuntu-18-04-remove-all-unused-old-kernels/
