I have an idea I been thinkin about. I went maple tapping in Vermont last year and it amazed me how everyone there does it. Literally the whole state shuts down when the maple sap starts running. I only knew a couple people back in Michigan who did it. Vermont is the top producer in the country, and Michigan is only 5th, despite arguably having a longer season and being the largest state east of the Mississippi.
So I started researching the profit per acre of a Michigan cornfield. My math says that a acre of maple trees, making 40-50gal of syrup would be 2x as profitable as an acre of corn.
Also been reading that in the regenerative farming community they're trying to get the farmers to replace their corn with Hazlenut trees, which take 6 years to produce, but when mature will make 3-5x the profit of corn per acre.
The way I see it we need to start buying up farmland and planting it with Maple and Hazlenut. Which of course has the added advantage of reforesting the state. -
