@aral Maybe you didn't read the last part of my post. I am certainly aware that it's about people and their life experiences but I was responding to talk about banning an instance because of the preferences or, perhaps poor wording by its mods and how that defeats the whole idea of the fediverse.
I didn't pick c.im because I thought it was a safe place for privilege. I was just starting out and looking for a small instance. Over time it has become obvious that, well, it IS a cat lover's instance and that the admin is, yeah, probably pretty privileged. But's it's really just a temporary home on the web to explore the world from. If there was hate speech or anything like that on the local timeline I would be out of there in a flash but it's really just like living in an apartment. You might not know or like your neighbors but it's a place to sleep and there's the whole world outside your door.
And looks like local discussion has inspired a change in the wording. As of now it says:
No discussion about racism, sexism, casteism, discrimination against gender and sexual minorities, or xenophobia on c.im public timeline.
It does not block CM content, follower only content, DM, etc.

robbielink (robbielink@c.im)'s status on Saturday, 31-Dec-2022 00:07:30 JST robbielink @aral I am on c.im and while I see your (all who have replied) points, I think some of this discussion is a bit mis-guided. If you were to create an instance for cat lovers only and didn't want posts about goldfish or, god forbid, dogs! and banned any mention of them on your local instance the cat lovers who also love dogs and goldfish can still follow other instances that allow those topics just as I can follow and respond to this topic on c.im. But on your cat server's local timeline I can just sit back and enjoy cats with no distraction (thankfully, no dogs).
There is a lot of discussion of racism in my timeline and I am free to join in - I follow a diverse bunch of folks scattered across the fediverse. I just can't bring it up as a topic on my server's public timeline. I do sometimes have to block individuals but I don't condemn them for their thoughts - I just don't want to see them myself.
Talk of blocking a whole server just because they don't serve up your particular need or interest defeats the whole idea of fediverse. It's not a "small world". It's a big world, all connected.
And for those who say my comparing like/dislike dog/cat to the discussion/no-discussion of racism is tone deaf - I'm just trying to get folks to step back and see there are other issues and I don't want to see all the predictions of the fediverse becoming balkenized come true.
Sorry for the long post.
