    I think the matter a7 mentioned is right. Let me suggest another point.

    Samurai were ruined like European knights. Late 19th century, the samurai's job was abolished and converted to the modern army with rifles and canons.

    Because the samurai’s enemy was another samurai, they were soldiers in the Japanese civil war for a long time. However, in the 19th century, there was a possibility that other countries (UK, France, US, etc.) colonized Japan by using their modern weapons.

    Then, some feudal daimyos decided to build a modern government with the parliament, threw away their katanas, and took guns.
