@vriska 9/11 stopped me from writing? Damnit... I knew those jokes this morning were some evil distraction concocted by some shadowy organisation to stop me from writing!
@JAJAX I am making the assumption that the truth and facts will cut through the lies out there. Or at least that it becomes obvious when someone is lying over time, like the mainstream media. All you have to do is know the facts or experience of something personally and see how much the media gets wrong, see what spin they are telling.
I don't think everyone has to agree for this to work, and it is great that we can debate things and use the scientific method. That we can be aware when someone is giving an opinion. Or when someone is genuinely unwell. There just has to be a general consensus based on the truth and facts which can be proven.
@aven@JAJAX I think you forgot to mention @Moon and @thatguyoverthere in regards to the Gulf of Tonkin incident. You have brought another good example to consider too.
@coolboymew A lot of men lost their lives at sea trying to stop the transatlantic slave trade. Freeing slaves around the world sort of became a cultural export, something that is largely forgotten but the British made efforts to free slaves in Asia and with countries that they did trade with. But bring this up and Britain will be seen as doing it for bad reasons so you don't win there. Better to not beat ourselves up over it while holding to the value of freeing slaves. Talk to people about it that are interested in learning the context too. There is still work to do in this field so it is a shame that we can't focus efforts on freeing current slaves.
@polarisera@Flick@HebrideanHecate Less related to novels, but I have heard someone speak about how films and TV shows suffer from characters that can't emote. This is a current problem for the strong female. They remain stoic so you can't really see the stakes in play, it's hard to believe that a character is in real danger if they don't show that they are. That they fear for their lives. How do you invest in this? It's a good lesson to learn in storytelling in general. If you have a stoic character, then you at least need another character to contrast them and reveal the danger they are in.
@polarisera@Flick@HebrideanHecate I don't think that I can think that way, even if it is a lottery ticket that my novels get found and picked up. I would be writing my novels anyway, in the hopes that I can learn to master my craft. I want to improve, edit and rewrite to make it the best that it can be. Although I think some of that comes with a skilled editor who can pick up on the mistakes as well as offer advice to expand on the themes and storytelling. I'm not sure if we have lost the skilled editors now.
This is ridiculous, I agree. Minorities have their own events and celebrations, the people calling to change traditional or British celebrations aren't calling to change those... but somehow we're not allowed to celebrate British traditions or have to make space for everyone else by changing the celebration itself due to sensitivities. I just don't get it.
@HebrideanHecate@Flick Thanks for that description. It made me curious if my own novels would fall under being tripe and I can only hope not.
I don't think the writing itself is my strong point... but I'll probably only know when I can finish it and get people to read it. It does suck to see that my craft has gone downhill so far when it comes to the quality overall. I guess this is the problem with mass-production.
@HebrideanHecate@Flick I know that feeling too well. Last time I went in one, I had the same feeling. But then it is also hard to find a decent place to buy books from as they have fallen the same way. I tend to look for secondhand book stores now, so at least it goes for a good cause if I do find something.
@HebrideanHecate@Flick That is sad, and it isn't easy to find the gems still coming out. Especially just going to the book shop itself. How would you describe utter tripe?
@thatguyoverthere@Moon For context, that literally happened but we don't focus much on the conditions of the workers working in the factories during the world war. You can learn more about one case here: https://yewtu.be/watch?v=DzQyfZR3hew
@thatguyoverthere@Moon I would argue that a lot of it is, yes. Consider that you want to get the support of your people to take part. You will emphasis the things that you think will get that support while downplaying other aspects. This is probably why there would have been less of an emphasis when a factory making munitions blew up and killed a lot of workers... and more of a focus on the victories at war or how patriotic it is to support the war effort rather than focusing on how unsafe it is for the workers when they do support it.
Focus on making the mainstream media trustworthy by them demonstrating that they can be trusted, and make it really easy to access the truth and facts, add context to it. Just talk to people, really. Word of mouth is powerful. People want to learn new things where they are.
It's not rocket science, unless you are trying to pass propaganda off as the truth.
