I considered all the things I'd done wrong, but also gotten right. I reviewed the joy as well as the hurts. The injustices, but also how fortune (God) smiled upon me at times. All this within five minutes.

I managed to keep from embarrassing myself with sobbing by also thinking:

I took six years of Latin. I had a Latin name, for criminy sake: Antonia. I should UNDERSTAND this stuff.

I woke up to a text from my daughter that included photo of the baby nursing: She wrote: You’re missing it. He’s so remarkable and you’re missing it.

I was speechless.

As far as my husband and I knew, we either get the booster, or we don't see the baby until he's vaxed at 6 months old.

In my kindest moment, I would say that our daughter is also grieving her parents not having met her baby, and the text was a last ditch effort to get us to get the booster shot.

But it felt mean.

Her husband, I suspect, takes his lead from our daughter who has, after all, the PhD. Her sources for Covid information are wildly different from mine.

What does NOT help, something for which I have no explanation, is that NO ONE they know has suffered harm from the vax & booster. Not neighbors, friends, family, co-workers, no one.It makes us, her parents, look like nutters. I'm glad they're all ok, but when she doesn't hear it, read it, or see it, the jab & boosters are fine

I think about that. I also think about how I hope to meet my grandson before all the vaccines he's going to get doesn't turn him autistic.

My daughter has known tragedy; I'm happy she found love, that she is well, & that their baby is ok.

But she will not get do-overs with her parents who love her, nor will I get the time back that I've missed in my grandson's early days.

There are worse tragedies I know of, but this one is mine.

I'm not sure I ever mentioned that every weekday morning for a good ten years, I attended Mass before going to school. It was required, & it had its pitfalls.

After some 50+ years, I attended a Latin Mass today. I'd forgotten some of what to do when, but the incense, the altar boys, the priest singing, the choir - it was like what I've heard death is like: You review your life.
