I think it's possible. Maybe when the developers implement new updates to the code mastodon.social resets itself to the one column view. It can be a glitch, I guess, but I don't know for sure

In my experience, it's kind of random. I activated the advanced interface a while ago, but sometimes it resets itself to the one column view.
I assume that this behavior is related with Mastodon code updates, but I can't be certain about this.
