@arstechnica I absolutely detest the whole "We said they're doing this, therefore you need to punish them on our say-so" routine... when all they have is an IP address at best. Cox provides a pipeline, and if anything they profit LESS (however tiny the amount) when people use it to download/share more things, so...

It's neat, but 2600 games don't hold up nearly as well as stuff from just a generation or so later, so this feels hopelessly over-engineered. (Hell, the Atari Flashback 2 was a 2600-on-a-chip sold for rather less)

I expect they finally saw the amount of pressure (like USB-C) and decided to maintain some appearance of goodwill by appearing to do it on their own. I also expect that it will continue to color them differently and there will be "unfortunate" interop problems or missing features to some degree. Still, it's progress!
