A while back I wrote a couple of blog posts about how I think LLMs will be a net negative (at least in the near term), due to the extreme overhyping giving people unrealistic expectations of their ability. The direct result will be an overall degrade in internet usability as people begin flooding platforms with low quality spam that they erroneously believe to be high quality. Previously it was fairly easy to spot someone who doesn't know what they're talking about, but now LLMs enable them to word things convincingly enough to waste the time of even domain experts.

Even now I'm still often surprised by all the creative ways that people are finding to waste other's time. I just saw this post from one of the curl maintainers reporting that they've been receiving nonsense bug bounty reports based on LLM hallucinations, which I imagine is likely due to people trying to automate bug hunting despite lacking the understanding to confirm their finding. They reported that in one case the submission was convincing enough that they went over the code 3 times before coming to the conclusion that no bug existed and the report was likely AI generate.

Coming at AI from a philosophy standpoint is super frustrating. A lot of questions like do LLMs think or understand are very complex, but many tech people simply take the position of we don't fully understand how human brains work, and we don't fully understand how ML models work, therefore those things are the same.

Twitter made a new ad for the platform that features a phone scrolling through Twitter. They ended up pulling it and remaking it after people noticed it contained a tweet mocking Elon for trying to blame Twitter's advertiser exodus on the jews. The second version of the ad, which is still online, contains a tweet about creampieing a rotisserie chicken.

This is the 20th time this year that I've overdrafted my bank account by forgetting to pay myself. Certified most useless person in existence.

For anyone unaware, Google Chrome is currently rolling out an update that track your interests based on browsing history, then share them with 3rd party websites. The notification page makes it sound like they added a new privacy feature, but in actuality they automatically enrolled you into their tracking system and you have to go and manually opt out.

@evacide I didn't even make it that far. I'm still stuck on wondering why the so called 'land of the free' that cares so much about free speech that they enable literal Nazis is talking about engaging in censorship of an entire social media platform.

I'm still baffled by the fact that working class conservatives exist. How do you look at a system where you have to basically be a millionaire to retire, can't afford a home, can't build wealth because interest rates don't keep up with inflation and people blow up the economy every couple of years, then be like "yes, this is it".

I'm all for making programming easier, but the problem with using ChatGPT to write code is that it doesn't write secure code by default. It lowers the bar to writing code, but raises the bar for securing code because users basically have to manually review code they didn't write.

Secure code requires that you take security into consideration while designing and writing the code. Then you go back and review the code for anything you missed, then have a second set of eyes do the same. With ChatGPT you basically just end up playing the free edition of bug bounty whack-a-mole but with your own software.

Using exams as a metric for AIs seems like a really weird decision. Exams aren't even a good metric for humans. All they do is test someone's ability to memorize answers. If someone was like "jimmy passed the bar exam after we gave him a cell phone with access to the internet and let him look up all the answers" absolutely nobody would be surprised.

The reason TikTok is such a threat is because it's not a Chinese platform, it's a global platform controlled by China. Theoretically at any point China could use it to drag foreign users into their sphere of influence. Twitter was a threat for the exact same reason. The difference being it's not a theoretical future problem. Its owner is already actively spreading Russian propaganda, amplifying fascists talking points, and openly admitted to manipulating the algorithm for his own personal gain. You currently have hundreds of millions of international users under the influence of a far-right pro-Russia Autocrat. If I was in charge of banning social media platforms I'd be watching TikTok very very closely, but I'd be holding a Defcon1 five alarm fire meeting about Twitter right now.

If the US wasn't a superpower, I'm pretty sure we'd all be in talks to discuss banning American media along with TikTok.
