The magnitude of the task to achieve a 2ºC pathway.
Take a look at the reduction in emissions from covid. In this dataset you are looking at a 5.7% reduction.
We need to have a reduction at this level EVERY year from now until 2030.
EVERY year.

"Valencia's regional government admitted that it had only sent out a text message warning residents of the impending catastrophe at 8:12 PM, eight hours after the first floods were reported, and 10 hours after Spain’s AEMET issued an alert highlighting “extreme danger” across the region."
Disasters like this will keep happening because we are NOT ready. Nearly 100 lives lost because the early warning system failed.

We have now arrived at a point where the science underpinning these two reports need equal *urgent* attention.
Adaptation to attempt surviving 2°C
Mitigation to attempt preventing 2.1° then 2.2° and heaven forbid 2.9°
Both actions are now critical
Car parks with space for 80 cars or more are now required by law to be covered with solar panels.
- Parks between 80-400 spaces have 5 years to comply
- Parks with spaces of 400+ have 3 years to comply
This will result in about 11 gigawatts of power.
This should be required everywhere!
This we can say with considerable certainty: We are completely unprepared to deal with a world at +1.5°C (imminent) given that this is the experience at +1.3°C
I don’t think any of us really understand how quickly collapse can happen:
> About 85% of the country expected to see highs of at least 40°C
> Almost 40% of the country’s dams below 20%
> 40% are between 20 and 50%.
> Mexico City (Population 22.51 million) forced to reduce water supply as reservoirs that feed city dry up.
> Stores running out of mineral water.
Since it is abundantly clear that we will smash through +1.5°C of warming shortly and very likely +2°C soon thereafter as a result of a lack of stringent emission reductions, best we understand, with urgency, what this means for the future.

Pay attention to the instrument data this tells us *exactly* what’s coming.
2024 starts with sea surface temperatures *above* where they were at the start of 2023 and above the record set in 2016 for this time of year, and just 0.1º below the record set in April and August of 2023 (orange line)
We are in a full blown #ClimateCrisis
12-year-old Licypriya Kangujam has the courage to disrupt the UN High Level Plenary Session at COP28 with a simple request: End Fossil Fuels
The adults in the room detain her for 30mins then today expel her from the event.

What a fascinating turn of events.
"Losses as a proportion of GDP have kept stable over the past four decades. But there are big local exceptions: last year hurricane damage cost Florida between 7.5% and 10% of the state’s GDP."

Just a reminder, the extreme events we are currently experiencing are all happening with the background warming of +1.28°C above preindustrial.
Things are only just getting started. The next 27 years are going to be filled with climate chaos.

What do you do first?
Turn off the tap or run to fetch a mop?
@aral I understand your comment completely! Man this is so extremely disheartening.
If you live in the UK, PLEASE for the love of mankind and everything we share this planet with vote these people out of office!
