@GrahamDowns I've got experience all the way back to the mid-2000s phpBB days 😂 At least I get to do something useful with that otherwise-misspent youth!

@weblearning @GTStevenson @mastodonmigration @hnygd Truth be told, I don't expect mastodon.africa to become "the largest instance in Africa" or anything like that - I only expect it to be a good example of what it takes to run a social media site, with learnings that can be replicated by other admins with more focused communities- like gaming, research, art, etc.

I'm happy for mastodon.africa to never go past, like 100 users, but instead, the backing entity supports a bunch of unique instances.

@weblearning @GTStevenson @mastodonmigration @hnygd And that's actually why I acquired mastodon.africa as a top-level domain: With the explicit intention of offering subdomains to any African admins that want one: gaming-za.mastodon.africa, art.mastodon.africa, writing.mastodon.africa, politics.mastodon.africa and so on.

I just haven't had the time/bandwidth yet to build out that vision, but that was the long-term idea :)

If there are committed admins out there who are willing to put the time in to moderate and grow their communities (it's a 5-day-a-week thing usually), I'm more than happy to supply the hosting, domains and devops required.

Long term, I want to be able to spin out Mastodon Africa as an NPO that supports multiple instances.
