Atheism is retarded; we simply do not know, objectively, whether God exists or not. Agnosticism is sanity.
Religion reflects being in tune with the poetry of life.
That being said, the Abrahamic religions are not for me.

I guess post-coitus flatulence might also be a problem.

Some things are unknowable.
Most people are agnostics who hope for the divine more than believe.
I think you mean Agnosticism there.
Atheism positively asserts a negation.
The scientific position is "we don't know."
"They can't prove that claim any more than believers can theirs."
Exactly. Not to mention positively proving a negation...
Agnosticism is the position you describe here:
"I will not [know if there is] a deity until there's sufficient evidence."
Counterpoint: works only for physical science.
Right, and without knowledge, you cannot say yes or no.
Only that you lack knowledge.
There may be UFOs; I have never seen one.
I am agnostic on UFOs.
I think I said:

The latter is agnosticism.
I think it a valid and highly defensible position because it interrupts the proposition "If what religion says is true, then we must" with "we cannot know if the first clause is true."
I am agnostic on fairies. Maybe they exist; maybe not. Cannot be proven unless someone captures one.
Lovecraftian horrors I dismiss because their creator referred to them as fiction.

Is this the 4D chess we have been promised?

It's Clown World.
Most beliefs are versions of the current thing, which is failing.
So almost everything is batshit insane.
I would agree with that, and might add: I am distrustful of religious texts generally.
Written things get misinterpreted.
It all seems very disconnected now, but the essence of Catholicism seems to be almost a direct fetishism of the Christ mythos.
Protestantism, like Buddhism, seems to be more focused on internal balance and clarity.
Then there's the various evangelical, prosperity gospel, and fundamentalist sects... who seem to miss the mark.
I could never get on the "bash the prots" train, and it reeks to me of Right-wing false hope like anarchy and "freedom."
It is fundamentally the same religion. The Catholic rituals are more physical, but the Protestants seem more attached to nature as a parallel to the gods (especially Calvinists).
Catholicism never went as far to recognize the inequality of souls, which is why it went so third world in the last century.
Pagan rituals tended to be based around nature and the seasons.
The personal nature of dualism came about through the Christian idea of moralism separating pure/Heaven from impure/Earth.
I think history will find that the Patriot Act was really bad news (as most things done in desperate panic times are, like COVID-19) and:
1. The start of the #LateStageDemocracy death spiral
2. A sign that diversity required constant monitoring to reduce terrorist events
Eventually, it will be used as the Alien and Sedition Acts were... to suppress opposition to war.
I agree here: the big point is that government wants/need surveillance, so we have to avoid Patriot Act style laws.
Those make it easy and therefore, it WILL be abused. They have a legal shield then.
Was the executive branch directly involved? There's a chain of command at NSA, DIA, CIA, DOJ, etc.
When the police commit the crime, you move up the hierarchy until you find someone responsible.
If you do that first, you rarely face consequences.
If you have evidence of a crime, you turn it over to the police.
If you are publishing leaked documents, you have to consider that those who own them still have a claim against you.
