wat? Matrix protocol supports e2ee and I'm pretty sure element enables it by default when creating a new room - at least when the room is a DM. You can also enable e2ee on any room after it's been created (you can't disable encryption though). You can also run your own server if you are uncomfortable with the storage policies of existing servers.
I figure if there is something around it'd be cooler than just some store bought robot that wants an app on a phone. He really likes building and fixing things so if it's something I can do with him and we can improve over time that'd be ideal. If not I don't mind assembling the thing for him ahead of time so long as he'll be able to interact with it in some way and it's not hundreds of dollars of equipment.
@Hyolobrika@logoninternet Because it's real I guess. I mean it's not that I enjoy watching people get turned into mist, but knowing what the weapons of today can do and how they work is probably a good thing.
@Hyolobrika gotcha. Yeah picking hardware can be a little difficult if you aren't quite sure what you will be doing with the computer. I haven't bought any new computers in quite a while myself. I am getting a framework laptop next year, and I'm going to help someone who wants to build a gaming computer, but we'll basically spec it to what the games he plays which will usually list minimum and opimal requirements.
@Hyolobrika@logoninternet Because the journalism still has an impact on those around me who can't see how unimportant to their lives stuff reported in main stream outlets is. The politicization of events and propagandizing of the masses changes public perception and creates divisions that do affect my life.
@Hyolobrika@logoninternet I do not feel like I NEED to know about wars halfway around the world. I think war news is some of the most propaganda laden content you can find. The only thing worth watching is the gore and that's not reported without plenty of censorship and a good political reason to do so.
I am a guy that does things. I used to run charlestown (dot) social along with a handful of other fedi sites (I've run peertube, pixelfed, mastodon, pleroma, and a few others) but I couldn't really get local adoption to pick up and the server costs were starting to run away so I downsized and Moon invited me over here while I regroup.> You are a manipulative liar and I have seen enough from you to have figured this out at this point. - Jeff Cliff
