I've signed an agreement to write a book about #ActivityPub for O'Reilly Media. The book should be available sometime after summer 2024.

I probably asked for it by using the word "surviving", but there's more climate edgelordism in the comments than I'm usually comfortable with.
In general, if you're doing omnicidal ideation, I don't want to talk to you.
I'm somewhat disagree. I think that we will need to change our understanding of mineral rights; a lot of those fossil fuels will need to stay in the ground.
And we'll need to start treating ecosystem services as valuable and deserving of compensation.
But in general I think liberal democratic values, like those enshrined in the UN Declaration of Human Rights, are sufficient to get us through this.
FUND FOR THE BLACK-RUN FEDIVERSE
UPDATE: GoFundMe shut this down. It's a long story.
Please instead donate directly to these great fediverse projects led by and for Black people.
https://www.patreon.com/Wibblur/ is Social Media by the people, for the people
https://www.patreon.com/andcomputers is making blacktwitter.io
https://blackqueer.life/ is a welcoming community for all Black queer, trans, and gender nonconforming people
https://www.gofundme.com/f/a-new-way-to-social-media Ro is making a new way to social media
I updated the original post so it has the direct links and can do the most good. Here's what it used to say:
"The fediverse needs more Mastodon instances run by Black people and targeted to Black people's needs.
It also needs directories, portals, relays, search, groups, clients, servers and other infrastructure tailored to the Black community.
If you want those things to exist, please donate to this fund.
If you are Black and want money to make those things, please let us know, and we'll get you some of the donated money."
Identi.ca opened up 15 years ago today.
Fifteen years ago tomorrow I published the first post on the fediverse.
https://web.archive.org/web/20080618164355/http://identi.ca/notice/1
It's still visible on Identi.ca today, although the URL format changed a few years ago, and the redirect plugin stopped working a few years after that. 🫤

Thanks to everyone who made identi.ca a great place to be, and thanks to everyone who's expanded the fediverse since then.
Someday soon-ish I'd like to have identi.ca working with ActivityPub. When I get the time for it!
@filipesm @aral the point of BS is to make a protocol that can be a product.
They don't build on open standards like ActivityPub because they want to own the network.
@filipesm @aral its flaws are that it was launched after AP was standardized and widely used.
Promoting the BS protocol right now is reckless and destructive. We need to rally around the protocols that are working, and improve them with extensions, not bottom up rebuilds.
The people working on BS know how much damage they could do, and they're continuing anyway, because they don't share our values.
Please don't give them attention. They need to disappear quickly.
This protocol was made by trans people and this culture was built by trans people.
If you love the #fediverse, thank your #trans friends, colleagues and allies today.
@fediforum demo of owncast! Says Gabe Kangas, "As with any other curl-to-bash install, make sure to check your shell scripts, because, hey, you don't know me!" Too true.
Has anyone written a good checker for install scripts so you could do something like:
`curl http://example.com/install.sh | isthisabadidea | /bin/bash`
