Especially since it will make it more interesting for journalists to join Mastodon. Important people garners journalists garners people who want to pay attention to the news through social networks. If that model actually works in practice, the admins can block the servers of the 'importants' while letting through the journalistic instances. Win-win

But while I don't think it's a good idea to federate with them, I do think it's a net benefit that they're using Mastodon. I doubt new users will be particularly compelled to join his server, but Mastodon/Fediverse as a 'brand' (in lack of a better term) gains name recognition. IMO, part of the Fediverse mission is to break up the centralized social networks, and this is excellent PR
