@Gargron An elementary school teacher told me her school tried Mastodon for a few days, and had to end the trial when parents called to complain of random porn in their kid’s local timelines. She thinks accounts should be forced to specify whether they will be posting “adult content” so that all or most porn can be filtered out with a single preference. It seemed a worthy idea for consideration. (But I’m sure it’s come up before.)

@Gargron @andypiper Wouldn’t search words “from shoq” have no colon at all?” I don’t recall all the other syntaxes, but not contesting it. Just tried Twitter. It too produces results for both, but more for no space (user wouldn’t know easily that its wrong). But whichever it is, I still feel it should be more explicit because visually it’s not clear in the tip. It sure “looks” like a space after the colon on the tip to me.

@Gargron @andypiper Can you auto-trim it out? I am sure millions add the space, reflexively. Even without it, my search is sparse. Shouldn’t the updating be happening in near real time? Is there some other issue? Spitballing: maybe posts via API are being dropped? (I use our Chrome extension)

@Gargron @andypiper I am again not showing up in search consistently, when showing up at all. Even “from: shoq” produces erratic results. Is this a known issue?
Also, please note that the search examples don’t make it clear whether “from: user” should include space after the colon or not. Both produce results, but very different results. With the other failures considered, it’s hard to say which is correct.

@aral And our attenuated voices are a minor problem compared to the impact he’s by making broadcasting some of the worst people on the planet, 24/7. These three cretins below are in my “For You” feed literally all day long. I don’t follow any of them. They’re just pushed in my face. He’s trying to flood the zone with GOP scoundrels and apologists, and obviously skilled operatives are manually directing this campaign. I’ve not yet seen a single reporter cover this.

Is any other Mastodon or other platform instance summarizing notifications, as is now standard on X, Bluesky and Threads? The present system is just tedious and forces me over to bluesky just to see reactions more easily. This is how Bluesky handles notifies. It’s just infinity superior.

@Gargron didn’t you once prevent repeat showings of my own post’s images, collapsing them to a link in my notifies? Now I’m overwhelmed with all these repeats in my notifications. They’re just distracting noise seen hundreds of times. If I must see anything, I just need to see the action on a piece of content, not the content itself.

@jayrosen_nyu I find it unfathomable that any critically thinking adult can still believe that rationale, which was sold to the public by Limbaugh apologists for decades, and about so many others since. And of course, no one sold it more than Roger Ailes and his agitprop network. It gave them all cover. Obviously, it still works.
