tl;dr Riot is adding anticheat that is a Windows kernel module. And because it's an anticheat, there's excuses to obfuscate the shit out of it and encrypt what it sends back to Tencent.

I pointed out that a signed kernel driver means it can be loaded into *any* machine running Microsoft Windows. Even if a video game isn't installed. If it contains a vulnerability or backdoor, that is a vulnerability or backdoor in all computers around the world running Microsoft Windows.

The latest fad in anticheat is kernel modules and I'm just not okay with anything that's not a device driver or a filesystem being in the kernel.

It's attack surface. Signed drivers can always be loaded, even if the app they're normally used for isn't present. So let's say there's a vuln in Ricochet or Vanguard. An attacker who wants NT_AUTHORITY\SYSTEM can load the vulnerable module and exploit it.

I think what they're trying to move towards is, you never ever have access to game assets you can crack and then pirate.

Absolutely ass for preservation of any kind. When the server shuts down, game is gone forever.

The top-rated comments where I found this were mostly "omg only allow trusted people to have this tech" (who decides what entities are trustworthy?). The most buried comments were "photoshop already exists"

Criminalize the distribution of non-consensual pornography. Do *NOT* require a loicense to run computer code.

I will not, for any reason, be obtaining a loicense to run code on my god damned computer. Period. This is not up for negotiation.
