@aral does VO maybe interpret "- 12" has "(dash) twelve", like a list item? Could it be a deliberate decision, to prevent the dash-lists to be read as “minus”?
(Have you tried using U+2212 (minus sign) instead of U+002D (the basic hyphen-minus sign)?)

I played a fair bit with voiceover when ai was an iOS developer and I knew about the macintalk emph thing, I thought screen reader automatically switched tone when reading, for example “something between quote marks”.
