Hope is truly god's gift to mankind. God enjoys human suffering above all else, but he knew if humans suffered eternally, they'd all just kill themselves and he'd never be able to enjoy their suffering past the first few generations. So he invented hope to give humans a reason not to kill themselves, so he'd be able to enjoy their suffering for longer. And the best part is, hope convinces them that eventually their suffering will end - that someday, when they die, they will be rewarded with eternal life in paradise for holding out through all of this suffering. Little do they know they'll just be reincarnated into the cycle once again, so they can live a new life for 70 or 80 or however many years, suffering and hoping for a better afterlife once again. Then they die again and start anew. That's god's only plan for humanity. -

@rms I doubt the mercury is the primary cause of the high suicide rates (since native communities in Canada tend to have much, much higher suicide rates than the general population due to numerous other factors), but there's no doubt that it's causing countless issues, and that those issues would likely compound with all of the existing factors that normally lead to increased suicide rates to further increase it. And beyond its impact to the people living there, the environmental impact of it is unfathomable. To quote the article, "A single gram of mercury is sufficient to make all fish in a 20-hectare radius unsafe for consumption" - so how much destruction will 20,000lbs cause? That's a level of environmental damage that's likely impossible to actually fix, especially after such a long period of being ignored. The animals and plants living there are likely forever posioned for countless generations to come. Even if the mercury could somehow be removed, the scars of the damage it has already caused to the wildlife and ecosystem will remain for longer than we can imagine. -

@zdl @djsumdog @mike Very often, instance blocks are over minor political disagreements, different software choices, outright lies, or mindlessly copy-pasting other instances blocklists without vetting them. Many instances are blocked by dozens of instances they have literally never interacted with just because someone on another instance had some minor grievance with a user, and rather than merely blocking them and moving on, decided to try adding their instance to a blocklist.
