In "De Architectura" (30 - 20 BCE) Marcus Vitruvius Pollio essentially extols understanding what you're building, how it's going to be used & what resources you have to build it as the essential first step to building anything. It's quite different from today's "we'll build something & then iterate until the customer stops screaming at us" approach.
