@aral So to get a functional screen reader, you need *checks notes* two extra clicks on the login screen to get X11, which works better or worse depending on your needs around many aspects of the desktop, which is why the choice is still there. Yes it's an ableist culture that allowed screen readers to remain broken on Wayland so long. GNOME is not a perfect project.
