@hazlin@shortstacksran.ch I would say it exemplifies the fact that he was suffering from the very doom porn he criticizes. Being aware doesn't make one immune.
It's tragic that he did this, and ultimately it undermines his point that we're not powerless and there's a lot we can do to change things. That doesn't necessarily mean that every action is a good one, and clearly this isn't a good example of one. To make things worse, I think this stunt undermines what appears to be a lot of decent research, that can now be even easier to dismiss as wholesale insanity.
@silverpill@mitra.social I am concerned the big picture plan (haven't seen he futo talk yet) is to basically try to regulate away small players entirely. Adding liability is a way to do it, but it sounds nice when people think of stopping big tech from censoring them, which is a fool's errand.
I'm assuming @Hyolobrika@social.fbxl.net was thinking more in terms of large services that most people are expected to be able to interact with one way or another (like github or Wikipedia).
@silverpill@mitra.social Great work! I love mitra already! I like how the front-end is setup so I can just do css overrides for colors and what not. Excited to dive deeper as time goes on!
Canadian media & govt personalities are launching an "I deserve better" campaign in response to the hate they receive from the public. It kinda comes off as "you can't talk to us like this" in an environment where they regularly talk down to the public about anything and everything. People in all kinds of positions of authority seem to forget that respect is a two-way street.
If you'll humor me @silverpill@mitra.social what are your thoughts on dero? Is it really a "holy grail" of privacy currency + smart contracts? The reddit is dead but allegedly other platforms have more activity.
From what I've gathered it's a 2/18.4M premine that appears to be actively developed.
@bot@seal.cafe It's when trucks or trains crash or get derailed. This can impact software development because programmers don't get their coffee on time and will introduce bugs in revolt.
I've changed my mind on live debates, and lean more towards them being a waste of time. I understand why with a lot of prep they could be valuable... That said, in high-stakes issues where people are unlikely to cooperate with their opposition, there's not going to be any meaningful progress made. If you think a live debate would be useful on a divisive topic, my recommendation would be to at minimum have someone (or a group) do the research to be able to solidly steelman (not strawman) the other side. But even then, I'm more partial to written/hypertext form than live performances.
Hot take: Big Tech was just Govt's buying time until they could get the rest of the surveillance grid up and running. The reason people find self-hosting difficult is that we've had essentially a 10 year dark age imposed by low interest rates and "free" online services.
'Member when people were saying this a decade ago and everyone was like "but they're not actually working with government, so we can't do anything 🤷♂️" and then we found out they actually were. Fun times.
