Whoa, that's been quite a ride. The result looks little impressive, but let me wrap up how I got here. On Black Friday I ordered the cheapest WiFi6 router I could find, a WAVLINK WL-WN586X3 for 39€. The OpenWrt Wiki said it was supported, albeit only in a snapshot, and using a bit convoluted procedure.
