I suspect it's that thermonuclear silver sandisk drive.
They get molten hot, yet perform perfectly fine. :ablobfoxhyperthinking:

I suspect it's the sandisk ultra flair.
The housing is metal and therefore you notice the flash running quite warm, more than with a regular drive.This would be supported by @foone's thermal image showing the body at a lower temperature as it reflects infrared, compared to the plastic.
