Okay, that's not real news, we've known that for awhile. The real news is that the seismic instability that results from that might affect NASA's moon landings. Here's more:
"Though the James Webb Space Telescope launched only two years ago, NASA already has its eyes on its next flagship space-based telescope, known as the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO)."
@Smithsonianmag says the new telescope "will offer ways to detect signs of life on other planets."
English physician Havelock Ellis was born #OTD in 1859.
He proposed and edited the “Contemporary Science Series,” which included his first book, The Criminal (1890). The researches begun for Man and Woman (1894) led to his major work, the seven-volume Studies in the Psychology of Sex (1897–1928), which publication of the first volume resulted in a trial.
The United States Department of Agriculture has updated its gardening map, which shows plant hardiness zones, for the first time since 2012. The new map indicates around half the country is warmer. Civil Eats talked to scientists, gardeners and other experts about the history of the map and what the changes mean for growers on the ground.
Mysterious bass sounds irking Florida residents might just be fish mating loudly.
@Smithsonianmag reports: "The Tampa community raised money to fund an investigation, and now, a local scientist will install underwater microphones to look for the source of the racket."
A study has found a strong link between Alzheimer's disease and the daily consumption of meat-based and processed foods.
Researchers at Bond University came to the conclusion after examining the diets of 438 Australians - 108 with Alzheimer's and 330 in a healthy control group.
Those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s tended to regularly eat foods such as meat pies, sausages, ham, pizza and hamburgers.
The moon is shrinking, which could cause a bit of a problem with the scheduled Artemis 3 landing in 2026. No, the moon is still a plenty big enough target. But the shrinking is causing moonquakes and lunar landslides. So when human boots tread the moon yet again, the humans in question will have to plan for the possibility that the ground under those boots is not as stable as they might hope. The James Webb Space Telescope never ceases to amaze. Recently released images of 19 distant galaxies captured by the $10 billion instrument reveals highly detailed, face-on views that have astronomers excited. "I feel like our team lives in a constant state of being overwhelmed — in a positive way — by the amount of detail in these images,” Thomas Williams, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oxford, said in a statement. A wildlife filmmaker and biology student appear to have captured the first-known footage of a newborn great white shark. Read about it at Science Alert, and watch video of the moment, among many others, caught by a drone camera off the coast of Santa Barbara, Calif. https://flip.it/uME2nw #Science#Sharks#MarineBiology#GreatWhiteSharks#Ocean
The European Space Agency and NASA have OK’d their Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) project, a gigantic gravitational wave detector that will spot ripples in space-time caused when black holes collide with other massive objects. From Phys.org: Climate change was the chief driver of the historic agricultural drought that affected millions of people across the Amazon basin. Plus, some scientists believe drying and warming may intensify in the region. https://flip.it/uLLpmG #Science#ClimateChange#AmazonRainforest#Brazil
Autism is highly heritable. An estimated 40% to 80% of cases are tied to genes passed down through families. Live Science expands on a new study that suggests a “butterfly effect” may explain how autism-related genes in DNA get switched on. https://flip.it/iIy8_A #Science#Autism#DNA#Genome
If it were ever possible to take a flight through the extreme conditions of Neptune's atmosphere, we might witness diamond rain tapping at our window. Science Alert has more on the research that shows how the fascinating phenomenon may be happening on more planets than we realized. https://flip.it/edHGAd #Science#Space#Diamonds#Neptune
