In the case of the reinhard camps , all prisoners in the camp were "sonderkommando" which are jews who are sorted on arrival to survive and work in the camp for various jobs that are top secret to the public like the looting , killing , and body disposal. They know immediately they are in a death camp and that at any point they could be shot for any number of reasons. They worked to live even if it meant killing and destroying the bodies of their own people.

In the case of auscwhitz. This is a massive labor camp of people who supply the IG fabren factroy with labor. majority of the buildings you see are bunks for them. However , the camp also has a extermination facility for people unable to work (old people , cripples , children , ect) . These were 4 buildings at the northern side of the camp , with 2 "optional" buildings outside the fence. The same selection happened here for sonderkommando. Instead of going to the gas chamber they were chosen to work and live in the crematoria as workers.
