a 100GB BDXL M-Disc costs ~$15 USD but will last over 100 years in non-special storage. It's kinda tempting to use them for occasional critical backups.
The question I guess is how hard will it be to get a BluRay drive in 100 years?

@crunklord420 Put a couple spares in the same storage. Maybe even the whole PC to transfer data from.

@s8n yes, according to ISO, US/UK Government. Apparently they can last thousands of years "in a salt mine". That's why I say "non-special".
-
@crunklord420 do they really last 100 years? CDs delaminate in 20-30
-
@BlinkRape @s8n I see it as a possible alternative to tape backups. Tape machines are very expensive, while M-Disc burners are very cheap. At a certain scale it makes sense.

@s8n @crunklord420 M-DISCS are different they are based on some kind of stone compound not the usual organic shit

@s8n @crunklord420 I have a M-DISC capable drive I bought, thinking I was probably future proofing but the format never really took off, outside of archivist communities

@crunklord420 doesn't a salt mine have relative humidity approaching 0%?
