It's not really the smartphone. The idea of abstracting the details of the filesystem started with Windows Vista/7/8 and macOS around the same era. It would have made sense if everything really flipped to not being a real file system (I think that was one of the ideas behind the failed WinFS), but instead the default UI for every desktop and phone operating system just gives you a super limited subset of a filesystem and obscures full paths and where everything actual is.
