For nerds who are programming for the sake of deep understanding, I recommend a lisp language (for programmable programming) and a machine language (for understanding the computer memory model) but for everyday life HTML/JavaScript will get you a long way, and is readily accessible so starting there sounds great, and ending there if it clicks with you.
