i love IRC. i love forum.
-
@lina @nishi I love XMPP but I do not love its desktop clients. In fact I rather dislike them and wish there was a decent TUI option with image + VC support
-
@Tadano @nishi @lina haha libpurple go brrr
-
@nishi i love xmpp
-
@lina @nishi Would be cool and satisfy my terminal autism :faunatarded:
And yeah I would love a client that looks like Psi. I just want a client that isn't shit and actually supported properly.
-
@Tadano @nishi you might be asking for too much if you're asking for VC support in a CLI client
i personally do not mind having a QIP styled client that is psi with file sharing support and vc being in mumble instead
-
@lina @Tadano @nishi
> you might be asking for too much if you're asking for VC support in a CLI client
toxic for tox has that, finch may do too cc @Zerglingman
every so often someone airs "man what if vc" in the profanity muc, and the answer is always "we take pull requests :)" so there you go
-
@menherahair @Tadano @lina @Zerglingman i just do (irc or xmpp) + mumble
-
@nishi @lina @Tadano @menherahair ^
There's a guy that roams around mumble, bit of a weirdo, keeps you humble, he always complained that my server will drop you if you try to upload images. I told him to stop using mumble for sending images. Let text chat be text chat, voice chat be voice chat, and file transfer be file transfer.
-
@menherahair @Tadano @Zerglingman @nishi yea exactly, either contribute a pull request or just use mumble, most people will choose the latter, expectedly
-
@menherahair @Tadano @Zerglingman @lina or fedi
-
@nishi @lina @menherahair @Zerglingman I ought to start a Mumble server already. Would probably run better than Matrix even with the usage of Dendrite or Conduit over Synapse
-
@Tadano @menherahair @lina @nishi Oh definitely. Mumble is like 1/10000th weight. Federation is heavy.
umurmur is basically "install, put channel name, turn on, forget", so ez.
-
@nishi @Tadano @lina @Zerglingman yeah I don't even have vc enabled in my xmpp server
-
@Tadano @lina @menherahair @Zerglingman >matrix
kill me. now.
-
@menherahair @Tadano @lina @Zerglingman good choice
-
@Tadano @Zerglingman @lina @menherahair i never liked matrix. NEVER.
-
@nishi @menherahair @lina @Tadano It's a very interesting tech demo.
-
@Zerglingman @Tadano @lina @menherahair why not use xmpp when it works :marseydespair:
-
@nishi @menherahair @lina @Tadano I do. I like xmpp a lot more than matrix. xmpp is, in my opinion, the best chat/IM protocol. It beats IRC solely on the grounds of allowing multiline messages. Formatting is nice but you can just do that clientside with markdown or whatever, not necessary.
Matrix, meanwhile, is not a chat protocol. It's a synchronisation tool.
-
@Zerglingman @Tadano @menherahair @nishi i did that once and i didn't get upset cuz come on man, mumble's inconvenient for looking at text messages, let alone images, just thought it'd work out cuz i don't like posting shit that has zero context
-
@lina @nishi @menherahair @Tadano Yeah fair. Clients expect servers to support it, umurmur apparently doesn't, it'd be nice if it just rejected it instead of dropping you. But you can just post a link or whatever, after the first time you discover it the hard way.
This guy actually wanted me to fix it. lol
-
@Zerglingman @Tadano @menherahair @nishi more like it's a proof of concept that you can imitate discord with foss that nobody cares about cuz discord users will keep using discord and people who like good software and protocols will use xmpp and a client of choice
-
@lina @nishi @menherahair @Tadano Surprisingly dicksore people actually do sometimes try using matrix. And then immediately come face-to-face with the reality that matrix is nothing like dicksore, and leave. It would be nice if they tried xmpp instead.
But one thing I have discovered is that normies care a lot about catchy names. Maybe we would have more success calling it jabber, but I like the filter as-is.
-
@Zerglingman @Tadano @lina @menherahair okay, but. client did not send the key.
-
@nishi @menherahair @lina @Tadano Every fucking time
-
@Zerglingman @Tadano @lina @menherahair (sync fail)
-
@nishi @menherahair @lina @Tadano It's eventually consistent; eventually, everyone will consistently be unable to read encrypted messages.
-
@PurpCat @nishi @menherahair @lina @Tadano Hmm... And most synapse servers have element-web installed alongside. You may be right.
I guess I should memorise the location of several xmpp web clients (hell, maybe even spin up one myself), and point people at that, see how it goes.
-
@Zerglingman @Tadano @lina @menherahair @nishi discords secret is it works in a web browser
-
@nishi @lina @menherahair @Zerglingman This sounds like you've experienced extraordinary pain firsthand with this protocol.
