"We're expected to indulge in the celebrations of various minorities but not allowed to celebrate our own traditions."
This is ridiculous, I agree. Minorities have their own events and celebrations, the people calling to change traditional or British celebrations aren't calling to change those... but somehow we're not allowed to celebrate British traditions or have to make space for everyone else by changing the celebration itself due to sensitivities. I just don't get it.

@sim Britain literally paid taxes until recently to free the slaves and stop slavery, so this whole self beating up shit is even more insane than usual

@coolboymew A lot of men lost their lives at sea trying to stop the transatlantic slave trade. Freeing slaves around the world sort of became a cultural export, something that is largely forgotten but the British made efforts to free slaves in Asia and with countries that they did trade with. But bring this up and Britain will be seen as doing it for bad reasons so you don't win there. Better to not beat ourselves up over it while holding to the value of freeing slaves. Talk to people about it that are interested in learning the context too. There is still work to do in this field so it is a shame that we can't focus efforts on freeing current slaves.
