The dispute here is not about multiplication but division. Order of operations is complete distraction from the simple meaning of the notation here: WHAT is being divided by WHAT. And saying, oh it's special because you have a fetish for a sixth-grade abbreviation of multiplication symbols, so that later it'll be easier to talk about polynomials, won't save you when you get to slightly more complex expressions.
