     @japananon One of the weirdest things about Japan from a Current Year Western perspective is that when they take in like 27 refugees and one of them commits a serious crime, there's actually action taken against the criminal and they don't just import a gazillion more of them.

     It kind of does. In America if you vote for less crime and immigration all measures to accomplish this get struck down by the courts. In Europe you can elect a populist party who'll just ignore you once they get in anyways. Japan still has enough homogeneity and cohesion where if enough people complain they can actually get bad policies fixed, which has not been the case in the living memory of almost anyone in the US.
