"Thou" used to be a singular "you," while "you" used to be exclusively plural. People say language is "evolving," but that seems to be a kind of devolution, a reduction in precision and expressiveness, much like the singular "they." I guess in some English dialects y'all takes up the plural while you is singular. But languages changing over time aren't always a positive thing.
