I've decided to move it every day to hopefully slow it down. I'm hoping to keep them distracted so they go after my food a little less. I only have the one feeder for now, but they also hit the chicken food in the yard.
I'm torn on whether or not I should get more feeders. I can't dump a bag of feed every week which is what happens when they start really hitting my current feeder heavily. I am concerned more feeders may just bring more of them to the yard which I wouldn't mind except then it's more berries getting yoinked.-

I did that, and filled them up when they were empty rather than on a regular schedule, then looked around one day and realised I was spending more on bird food than I was on dog, horse and duck combined.

I'm hoping by moving it around I can make it so birds living in the yard can find it but they won't be able to invite friends -

Flick 🇬🇧 (flick@spinster.xyz)'s status on Friday, 30-Jun-2023 20:07:43 JST Flick 🇬🇧 @thatguyoverthere I deliberately bought one that’s large bird proof, and it has indeed defeated the local crows, but sadly the small birds don’t seem to know what it is.

To date I haven't had any crows go after it. It's got a cage around the feeding area that might make it hard to find a spot to land. -

Flick 🇬🇧 (flick@spinster.xyz)'s status on Friday, 30-Jun-2023 20:12:28 JST Flick 🇬🇧 @thatguyoverthere The annoying thing is that I have started to see small birds in the garden, they just haven’t learnt what the feeder is for.
Maybe when I have my shed and can fix it to that, a bit higher up, they’ll be happier with it.

Last year the baby and I would fill it and by the end of the day it was empty. I haven't been as active filling it this year. I want to do it once or twice a week if I can. -

I just spotted a FAT robin so they have plenty to eat hahaha I just want to give them feed as more of a distraction. Splitting it up into multiple areas seems like a good way to eat into their foraging time. -

I have multiple feeders but I don't fill it. I only give a cupful everyday and divy it up between the multiple feeders.Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this. -

I do it because the squirrels are such piglets, they'll empty a full birdfeeder in a day. Birdseed is too dang expensive now to waste it. For my birthday this year i asked my mom for 2 - 40 lb bags of birdseed. They like the seut feeders too and the seut blocks are pretty cheap at the feed store. Those last about a week and will keep then occupied. I've noticed they like it better when I have the seut anchored to the tree and not swinging aroundDisinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this. -

I usually only out them out in spring and fall because the one time I tried in the summer it turned into a puddle of grease, but it was in direct sun iirc. -

I don't know. I've never really had a problem with the store bought ones. The homemade ones melt into a gooball within minutes.
I hang it around the trunk of a cedar tree so its shady and never any direct sun on it. Maybe that keeps it solid?Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this.
