Am I missing anything about the whole Reddit freakout?
The company isn't profitable, third-party applications make profit off free API requests, while costing Reddit money and losing them revenue. Redditors cry over it because stuff isn't magically free. The end.
-
@parker They shouldn't have started hosting videos and images on locally if they couldn't afford it.
-
@coin Using some other company to host images/video is just offsetting the costs to that company and in the end still has to be paid for by users somewhere.
-
@parker Reddit could have went about this differently too, instead of being angry that 3rd party app is much better than the 1st party app.
I won't shed any tears, though. Glad I don't use that site.
-
@coin Also as much as I dislike Reddit, it's better having content controlled by multiple organizations, rather than giving YouTube a total monopoly.
-
@parker I'm seeing a slow trend with big bursts of people moving to federated services. Hopefully it sticks that way.
-
@parker @coin and people did it, imgur was just that
you could whip up the datahoarders to create up a reddit @ home, and they'd do it
but you're right, it's too late for any good faith effort, it wants an ipo, enshittification and cloud bills is what it deserves
-
@coin I don't use it either, but given how Redditors are, Reddit BTFOing Redditors is good.
-
@parker @blaaablaaaa @BowsacNoodle There's also the kbin software.
-
@blaaablaaaa @coin @BowsacNoodle Federated Reddit alternative. See join-lemmy.org
-
@parker @coin I'm not familiar with this but I saw people mention it a few times. Is it fediverse redditors?
-
What is a lemmy instance?
-
@BowsacNoodle @coin At the very least, the new Lemmy instances are pretty block-heavy.
-
@coin I'm glad for it too, hopefully they keep shitting everything up. Except that I don't want Redditors on the fediverse, so I hope they stay on Reddit and get all their demand met there.
-
@parker @coin It's cool that it's a containment zone, but I hope it's a slow collapse so there's at least alternative funnels for them to go to. I don't want them pooping all over the next area like the locust creatures they are.
