For generations my father's family were gravediggers, we've got a bag of old Chinese coins and trinkets my great-something-grandfather pulled off of corpses during the Spanish Flu (since we imported a lot of Chinese to work in coal mining), so my family consisted of pretty bottom-tier peasants for a very long time, having come to the US in the early 1700s. But in recent generations we've been digging our way out, my father being the first to go to university, me being the first to get a PhD, slowly accumulating land, money, education. So I don't know if I agree with all that.
