   @transform "need" is a strong word. i think it's useful and the proposed "replacements" seem pretty dubious to me. but what makes it anarchist is that people have the choice to agree on whatever social/economic mechanisms they prefer.

   i prefer the term "units of exchange" though. accounting smells like suits 😉.

     @sofia @transform i think you absolutely do need it as money prices are the only way to do economic calculation. All voucher schemes reinvent money in a worse way.

     @sofia @transform I don't find graeber very illuminating on this issue. Of course you won't send me an invoice when I ask you to pass the salt, but that's not communism. And I don't think it has much to do with the need to figure out how many people should become brain surgeons and how many people should become twitch streamers.

     @lain i agree on the voucher part, i'd just to add hat it doesn't mean that everything should have a price.

     David Graeber's example is asking people for the way in unfamiliar places. some people have higher needs to know, some people may be able to explain it better. but it makes no sense for people to grab their wallets and hold an auction. just quickly helping out is more efficient. "everyday communism" as he calls it.

     @lain as i understand him, he doesn't believe in "full communism", it's just a matter of degree.

     there seems to be a fair case that a free society would have more of that. i think states probably have a tendency to push such interactions into the cash nexus, to tax them and to have them "contribute" to GDP and such metrics.

     then again, the taxation itself is a disincentive for that…
